What
We Do.

Oranga Hou

Health and Wellbeing

Oranga Hou is the wellbeing arm of Ngāti Tamaoho. By participating in hui a iwi and surveys our members have identified priorities for Ngāti Tamaoho.

These priorities have since formed the basis for work that has been completed, in progress or yet to come.

Oranga Hou priorities are:

  • Education
  • Health
  • Economic Development

Mātauranga

The Ngāti Tamaoho Education Resource Development Team is working in collaboration with historians, researchers, orators, and ecologists, all of whom have assisted with the design of these learning resources. Our aim is to inform an awareness and understanding of conservation by focussing on an eco-system, species or issue in relation to a site of cultural significance within our geographical area (rohe).

We would like to share our ‘kete of knowledge’ (basket of knowledge) with you by providing this learning resource based on the fundamental principles of kaitiakitanga and manaakitanga.

Te Taiao

Environment

Ngāti Tamaoho Trust’s Te Taiao Rōpū deals with environment issues within Ngāti Tamaoho tribal rohe which encompasses the greater Tāmaki Makaurau and Northern Waikato.

Our kaitiakitanga/guardianship role is protection of our taonga, wāhi tapu, awa, moana, ngāhere, maunga and whenua.

Te Tiriti o Waitangi and its intended partnership and principles and the Resource Management Consent are processes that Ngāti Tamaoho use to challenge, educate (traditional expertise, māori world view) and mahi tahi/work together with councils, developers and the general public to help achieve our moemoea/dreams and aspirations of kaitiakitanga of Papatuanuku and Ranginui.

The six major issues that Te Taiao focus on are:
  • better sedimentation control
  • quality stormwater control systems
  • innovative wastewater systems that don’t impact on our harbours, awa and waterways
  • riparian planting
  • fencing of waterways
  • not supporting development of green fields (rural areas).

This is an overview of the daily operations of Ngāti Tamaoho Trusts Te Taiao Rōpū engagements with new and historical entities wanting to deliver their kaupapa within Ngāti Tamaoho rohe/area.
